The International Baccalaureate

Students in class.United World College-USA offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma curriculum which meets the educational requirements of students from many different cultures while also providing a demanding academic program appropriate as preparation for the world's best institutions of higher learning.

There are more than 582,000 IB students at 2,167 schools in 125 countries. There are in excess of 600 universities and colleges in nearly 50 countries that have accepted students with IB credentials. Many of these institutions of higher learning, particularly those in North America, grant advanced standing to students with an IB diploma.

UWC students pursue a two-year course of study that prepares them for the IB Diploma examinations at the end of their second year. However, the broad knowledge and experiences gained by United World College students far exceed the expectations of these required examinations.

The IB Curriculum at UWC-USA
Student discussion in class. Students must take course work in six subjects in preparation for the IB Diploma examinations. In addition to taking these academic subjects, they are required to participate in various forms of extracurricular activity to fulfill the IB Diploma requirements.

The primary language of instruction is English, although students may write their IB examinations in English, French or Spanish. Students who do course work in a language other than their native tongue are awarded a bilingual diploma.

In their first year, students are required to select six subjects, one from each of the first five groups listed below. The sixth may come from group six or an additional from groups one through four. At the end of the first semester, they must choose which three of these courses they will take at the higher level. These advanced courses have a more demanding work load and a greater time commitment than the standard level courses, and as a result meet the prerequisites for advanced standing in many North American universities.
